Disclaimer: I have had an unreasonable crush on Robert Downey Jr. for something like 18 years. Therefore*, my reaction to this movie can unsurprisingly be summarized as the following:

SQUEE!!!

(loved Gwyneth Paltrow, too!)

*and because it was actually good!

Hee. It was really lovely. It made me want to read the comics. That hasn't happened since the first X-Men movie.

I'd start with Warren Ellis' Extremis, which has just come out in German if you don't want to pay for an import, and is currently available in every train station book store that I've seen. Not only is it well written but it was meant as a relaunch at the time (i.e. this is the first one that updates the original Vietnam story to Afghanistan and rearranges Tony's age accordingly), and you don't need to know more backstory than what you do from the film. Also, great treatment of the whole "how do I deal with my weapons dealer past?" question, and only a few characters, all of which except for Tony get newly introduced in this story, so you won't be confused with "who are they again?" which sometimes happens if one starts to read a long-running comic.

If you want something with Pepper in a strong role, I'd recommend The Order, but that one demands a bit of backstory knowledge, especially about Civil War. And as for Civil War, well, if you want to tackle the big one and avoid the not so well written stuff, I'd go for the English trade collections (the German editions mix some titles in a very confusing manner), and read:

Civil War: The Road to Civil War and Civil War: Iron Man.
